AI Foundations and Applications
Moderated by George K. Thiruvathukal, PhD.
This kickoff panel will provide a general overview of the principles of AI and its historical foundations. From Turing’s early explorations of machine intelligence to the development of foundational AI methods, we will examine how AI has evolved and where it stands today. Panelists will bring both disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, addressing the core technical foundations of AI, its applications, and its present limitations and challenges. While ethical, legal, and social considerations are vitally important to all of us, they will be the focus of future panels—this discussion will center on what AI is, how it works, and what it does (and does not) do. Additionally, the panel will explore practical strategies for incorporating AI into day-to-day academic and professional life, helping attendees understand how to effectively integrate AI tools into research, teaching, and industry workflows.
